Hi everyone,
I'm usually reticent to actively support any political party (other than via my vote), whether it be in my adopted country in the first world, or the country where I used to live. However, I was fortunate to be able to ask Mr. Ian Smith in an interview on the MSNBC Web site whether or not he would recommend that people support the MDC. Although the party is relatively new, and Mr. Smith said he would like to know more about it, he said that they are the only viable opposition to the tyranny of ZANU-PF and he does support them.
I have been in touch with the ex-Zimbabwean solicitor in London who is administering the MDC account in the UK. I am also going to try and get in touch with most of the major banks around the world to get whatever information I can about how one goes about transferring money to the MDC account in London. In the meantime, if you would like to donate to the MDC please contact your local bank and find out from them what the procedures are. Once you do find out, I would really appreciate it if you would e-mail the details to me at DELETED so that I can pass them along to everyone else.
The information for the MDC account in London is below. Donations can be sent to:
National Westminster Bank
City of London Branch
1 Princes Street
London EC2R 8PB
United Kingdom
Account Name: MDC Trust UK
Account Number: 71070397
Sort Code: 50-00-00
The London solicitor says, "As I understand it the only way to transfer money from the States / Canada is by SWIFT code NWB KGB 2L to the bank" (address above). Hopefully this will make sense to the bank teller you deal with at your branch! I presume one could also send a cheque to the above address payable to "MDC Trust UK", however, I don't know that for sure.
Another point the solicitor made is that the bank raises a fee for every deposit. I don't know what the fee is, but it will obviously come out of your donation. So, if you can somehow combine donations with others, then more of the money will go to the MDC than if the same donations were made separately.
Other information I have received (not from the above mentioned solicitor) says, "PricewaterhouseCoopers have been retained as independent auditors to the Trust. This is a transparent account, and all funds donated will go to the MDC campaign to get Mugabe out."
For more information see the MDC Web site at http://www.in2zw.com/mdc .
A side note -- I have excluded the Zimbabwean e-mail addresses on this list from this message, for obvious reasons. Besides, they will be able to donate and contribute to the MDC at home (hopefully), so don't really need this information.
